The Amazonas Court ordered the concessionaire Amazonas Energia to pay an compensation of more than R$2 million to the Fund for the Compensation of Diffuse Interests Damaged due to the blackout that occurred in Manaus (AM) in 2012.

The decision takes into the losses caused to the population by the prolonged interruption in the supply of electricity due to a blackout

The conviction is based on a public civil action brought by the Public Ministry of Amazonas, through the 51st Prodecon (Public Prosecutor's Office Specialized in Consumer Protection and Defense).

In the ruling, issued in 2020 by Judge Abraham Peixoto Filho, it was highlighted that Amazonian consumers were harmed both by the prolonged interruption of the electricity service and by the overload in the return of the service, which damaged electrical appliances.

The judge also stressed that Amazonas Energia did not adopt preventive measures to minimize the impacts of the blackout. In addition to the compensation, the company was ordered to publish the main part of the sentence for three consecutive days in three major media outlets in the state.

Blackout in Manaus

In 2012, Manaus faced one of the worst blackouts in its history, leaving thousands of consumers without electricity for more than 24 hours in some regions. The failure of the region's electrical system affected essential services and caused inconvenience to the population.

In some areas, the overload in the supply return damaged household appliances and electrical equipment, which led the Public Ministry to file a civil action against the concessionaire Amazonas Energia.
