The board of ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) is meeting this Tuesday (29) to define and disclose the amount of the adjustment in the extra energy charge. Last Friday (25), the institution announced that electricity bills in July will continue with the red flag, at level 2, due to the drought affecting the hydrographic basins of the SIN (National Interconnected System).
According to the Agency, the month of July will begin with an unfavorable hydrological outlook, with the main reservoirs at considerably low levels for this time of year – which signals a horizon with “reduced hydroelectric production capacity and a high need to activate resources thermoelectric”.
The entity also highlights that the current situation puts pressure on costs related to hydrological risk and the price of energy in the short-term market, leading to the need to activate level 2 of the red flag. These two conditions are what determine the color of the flag to be activated.
According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), the country will spend more than R$9 billion to generate energy from January to November this year due to the extra activation of thermoelectric plants. This amount will be ed on to consumers in 2022. In the last two months, the additional amount paid by Brazilians on their electricity bills increased by 364,8%, jumping from R$1,343 to R$6,243 for every 100 kWh consumed. (Learn more here).
tariff flags
created by ANEEL For six years, the tariff flag is a system that applies an additional charge to electricity bills whenever there is an increase in the cost of energy production in the country. The aim is to make the increase pay for the more intense use of thermoelectric plants.
It works simply: the colors green, yellow or red (at levels 1 and 2) indicate whether the energy will cost more or less due to the generation conditions. “With the activation of the red flag at its highest level, it is important to reinforce to consumers actions related to the conscious use and combating energy waste”, informs the ANEEL.
