ANEEL the number of families served by Mais Luz para a Amazônia increases

With approval, the number of Brazilian families benefiting rose from 78,5 to around 220

A ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) approved, this week, the resolutions that improve the Mais Luz para a Amazônia Program, which aims to promote access to electricity for the population that lives in the remote regions of the states of the Legal Amazon, aiming at the social and economic development of these communities.

The Agency reported that it recognized that the initial goals of the program, with the total estimated number of families to be benefited, increased from 78.543 – at the opening of the public consultation – to 219.221. The regulatory proposal aims to establish a forecast of the program's goals, monitoring compliance, setting the rules for available power and costs for operation and maintenance of the isolated generation system.

The public consultation was carried out between December 10th last year and March 1st this year and received 42 contributions from nine different companies. Some reported increases in the number of consumer units potentially capable of supplying electricity.

Director Sandoval Araújo, the rapporteur for the case, stressed that all Brazilian citizens must have access to electricity. According to him, this is increasingly essential to ensure a dignified life for these people. “Within this premise, Mais Luz para a Amazônia emerges as an inclusive, socially fair public policy that seeks to give citizenship to people living in remote areas,” he said.

The director reiterated that the initial goals for the program are indicative in nature, only to consolidate and signal to the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) and society the demands known by the distributors, clarifying that the works programs must be submitted for analysis of the MME and Eletrobras.
