The number of electrical accidents continues to rise throughout Brazil. Data from Abracopel (Brazilian Association for Awareness of the Dangers of Electricity) reveals that, in 2024 alone, 2.373 accidents caused by electric shocks, short circuits and overloads were recorded.

This volume represents an increase of 11,6% compared to 2023. In total, 759 people lost their lives last year – an increase of 12,6% and the highest number of deaths ever recorded in the entire historical series.

Inadequate electrical installations, use of materials outside of standards, lack of maintenance and hiring of unqualified professionals are among the main factors, according to the Abracopel survey.

The study also indicates that a large proportion of the products sold do not meet technical standards, which increases the risk of overheating, short circuits and fires.

Abracopel also points out that the increase in fires is directly linked to the sale of poor quality wires and cables, which do not meet minimum safety requirements.

Prevention campaigns

Faced with this worrying scenario, companies from different segments have launched awareness campaigns to try to change the reality of electrical accidents in the country.

A Siemens Brazil, for example, announced a new edition of the campaign “Say Yes to Siemens”, with presenter Renata Fan, reinforcing the importance of electrical safety in the domestic environment.

“The alarming data reinforces the urgency of prioritizing electrical safety in our homes,” said William Pereira, vice president of the Smart Infrastructure area at Siemens Brazil.

Another initiative came from cemig (Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais), which once again warned about the dangers of the electrical grid and how to avoid accidents and fatalities.

“Energy is essential, we depend on it for almost everything nowadays. But we need to be very careful to avoid accidents,” he said. Demetrio Aguiar, the company's electrical engineer.

The professional also emphasizes that any carelessness or poor condition of the electrical installation can “cause a serious accident that, if not fatal, will leave irreversible consequences”.
