Last year, 239 GW of solar energy were installed worldwide, an increase of 45% compared to the volume installed in 2021. The data is from “Global Market Outlook for Solarpower 2023-2027”, launched this Tuesday (13) on the first day of Intersolar Europe congress, based in Munich, .

One of the highlights of the report is that 118 GW, or 49% of the total installed last year, are from rooftop installations. This volume is 50% higher compared to 2021, when the volume was 79 GW.

At this point, Brazil stood out. In 2022, the country added 5,3 GW in rooftop systems, an increase of 193% compared to 2021. In Solarpower Europe's assessment, this growth rate in Brazilian territory “was driven by the rush of installations that sought to benefit from conditions before the rule changes in 2023”.

Regarding the expansion of solar sources around the world, the report points out that this increase can be attributed to a combination of factors, including the stabilization of supply chains and the energy crisis that has raised electricity prices worldwide.

“In response to this challenge [increasing prices] many people and entities have turned to solar energy as a viable solution to meet their energy needs. The combination of these positive factors brought the best year-on-year growth rate since 2016, when the global market was well below 100 GW”, indicated the study.

Scenario for 2023

For this year, in an average scenario, Solarpower Europe projects an expansion of solar sources in the world of up to 341 GW, an increase of 43% compared to 2022. This volume could reach 40 GW, when considered a high scenario of energy growth. photovoltaic installations.

The factors that contribute to this scenario, according to the association, are the versatility of solar energy together with the low cost of utility scale projects.

The report also points out that, despite the increase in the LCOE of photovoltaic projects due to problems in the production chain and inflation, “it is still much cheaper to produce electricity from photovoltaic sources than from fossil fuels and nuclear energy”.

Projection for the Brazilian market

Brazil is in sixth place in the ranking of the TOP 20 countries with additions in solar energy between 2023 and 2027. With a projected growth of 23% between 2023 and 2027, the Brazilian market could reach the mark of up to 68 GW in installed photovoltaic power by 2027 .
