The Federal Government needs to decide on the possible advancement of clocks by next week, said the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira. The measure would be implemented as early as November, right after the second round of municipal elections, to ensure enough time.

Silveira highlighted that, if daylight saving time is essential to ensure safety and affordable tariffs in the electricity sector, it will be adopted “with all courage, even knowing that it greatly divides opinions in Brazil”.

If implemented, the population will have 20 days to adjust to the change, and sectors such as aviation have already been previously informed.

ONS sees reduction of up to 2,9% in maximum demand with daylight saving time

“Daylight saving time is a global policy that was irresponsibly eliminated in 2019 for dogmatic reasons. The former president did not explain why he said the measure was no longer necessary. It is, in fact, a policy adopted by several developed countries when necessary,” argued Silveira.

The minister explained that the electrical system faces overload at the end of the day due to the drop in solar generation and the simultaneous increase in energy consumption at the beginning of the night. With the clocks being moved forward by one hour, ONS (National System Operator) would have more flexibility to manage this growing demand.

Cargo demand for SIN should increase by 4,2% this week

The main energy sources in Brazil include hydroelectric, thermal and nuclear power, but 2024 has been marked by the worst drought in the last 74 years. If forecasts indicate good rains in November and December, Daylight saving time could be postponed to 2025.

An answer

  1. The claim that the main energy sources in Brazil are hydroelectric, nuclear and thermal is false. Solar is the fastest growing and its technological innovations are spectacular. Along with wind power, its installed capacity is already the second. It is a movement with no return and the trend is the hybrid system with batteries. Innovations in this sector are unimaginable. For the safety of installations against electric arcs, there are already inverters that protect the installation against them. In direct current it is extremely dangerous because it works like a blowtorch. Let us that generation is in direct current, therefore, it does not go through zero.
