The rains that returned to the interior of Brazil in October and November are expected to continue in December, with above-average accumulations expected for the Southeast, part of the Center-West and some areas of the South.

The forecast is from the consultancy Tempo OK Meteorologia, which warns of frequent and heavy showers, especially between the north of Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo, as well as Mato Grosso do Sul, mainly in the first half of the month.

According to Maria Clara Sassaki, spokesperson for the consultancy, the scenario will be different in the north of the country, where rainfall is expected to be more irregular and temperatures higher in the first 20 days of December.

From the 20th onwards, however, humidity corridors will be able to form more easily in the center-north, favoring rains with greater accumulations in the rest of the Southeast and Center-West.

“It is worth noting that, even with the increase in rainfall in the last 10 days of December, the accumulated rainfall in these areas is not expected to exceed the average for the month. This is due to the predominance of more stable weather and irregular rainfall in the first 20 days,” explains Sassaki.

According to the consultancy, the highlight in relation to temperatures in December will be the period between the 8th and 20th, when a dry air mass will predominate over the Southeast, Center-West and interior of the Northeast.

During this period, drier weather will contribute to above-average temperatures and low relative humidity, especially in the interior of the country.

Regarding solar energy generation, Tempo OK analyzed that the frequent rains forecast for the Center-South of the country, mainly in the first half of the month, should impact the performance of solar generation, especially in the state of São Paulo.

Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, the triangle, the south and the Minas Gerais forest zone, the south of Goiás and Mato Grosso. On the other hand, the north of Minas Gerais and a large part of the Northeast are favored for solar generation during this period.

The second half of the month presents a very favorable environment for the organization of humidity channels between the Southeast, Central-West and Northeast. “In this context, it is very likely that the environment for cloudiness and frequent and more persistent rains will negatively impact solar generation in these regions,” Tempo OK said..

According to Tempo OK, after the 20th the dry air mass will lose strength, allowing the advancement of instabilities, which will result in increased cloudiness, rain and falling temperatures in the last days of the month.

The consultancy explains that regarding the minimum temperature, the excess of cloudiness in the center-south of Brazil in the first half of the month will cause the minimum temperatures to be higher than usual for the time of year, especially in Santa Catarina and the north of Rio Grande do Sul.

“It is also possible to observe very positive temperature anomalies in Mato Grosso do Sul and in the interior of São Paulo, most likely related to the very hot days that are expected to occur between the second and third week of the month,” comments the specialist.

Forecasts for the period between Christmas and New Year's are still imprecise, but the trend points to a high possibility of rain in the north-central region of Brazil. "Although this forecast requires monitoring, it is important that those planning to spend the end-of-year festivities on the beaches of the Southeast be aware," warns Sassaki.
