According to data from CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber), electricity consumption increased by almost 2% in Brazil in the third quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2019. Data from July to September, now consolidated, shows that the period was the first in 2020 to record growth in results in the annual comparison.
Accompanying the increase in volumes of energy consumed, generation also increased by around 2% in the third quarter compared to 2019. According to CCEE, hydroelectric plants produced 14,7% more than last year. In relation to wind and solar photovoltaics, the survey also showed an increase of 10% and 26,4%, respectively. Only thermoelectric plants ed a reduction between July and August, of 36,2%.
Solar sector grows in Q3 2020
According to data from the ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), the solar source reached around 520 MW of power in the third quarter of this year. For Guilherme Susteras, coordinator of the distributed generation working group at ABSOLAR (Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy), this observed growth shows the robustness of the sector.
“Despite the pandemic, the economy managed to keep turning. And this robustness is what will allow the segment to contribute to the generation of jobs and income that Brazil so desperately needs to return to growth, after the peak of the quarantine”, highlighted Susteras.
