In a press release, the FL Paulista highlighted that, to cause interference or damage to the electrical network, the flames do not necessarily need to reach the power cables.

According to the company, the heat from the fire generates an ionized field around the wiring, which can cause short circuits and disconnect the lines or even break them, interrupting the supply.

“Fires, often started criminally or to prepare agricultural land, are driven by winds and have aggravated effects when they reach transmission lines and power distribution networks. This occurs in both rural and urban areas. In addition, fires can be caused by the burning of garbage or lit cigarette butts thrown near dry vegetation,” explains Fernando Amaral Zica, Relationship Consultant at FL Paulista.

“Our mission is to alert people about safety with the electrical grid and the quality of distributed energy. In dry periods like the current one, fires directly affect the environment and can harm people’s health, in addition to interfering with the energy supply and creating the risk of accidents,” says Raphael Campos, FL Energia’s Occupational Health and Safety Manager.

Given the importance of the topic, FL provides the tool “Guardian on Zap”, the company's WhatsApp channel designed to expand the reach of the main guidance messages regarding the risks involving inappropriate with the electrical system.

Outside permitted areas, fires caused in urban areas, such as burning rubbish, may be classified as a crime. In these cases, the penalties may be fines, arrest or imprisonment for the perpetrators, depending on the extent of the damage caused.

When identifying a fire outbreak, FL advises the population to immediately the Fire Department and the competent authorities.
