A UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) managed to suspend the power outages in court by Light, due to non-payment of overdue debts. In total, 15 buildings had their electricity cut off last Tuesday (13).

Despite the decision to restore electricity to several units of the institution, the cutting off of the water supply by River Waters remains, reaching vital points on campus such as the restaurant and student housing.

Judge Alcides Martins, from TRF-2 (Federal Regional Court of the 2nd Region), determined that Light refrain from interrupting the energy supply to UFRJ facilities and immediately reconnect the facilities that suffered power outages.

The decision took into the need for energy to develop academic activities and student assistance offered by the university.

The debt with Light totals R$31,8 million, relating to invoices due between March and November of this year.

In addition, there are R$3,9 million in unpaid installments from an agreement signed in 2020. The total debt was R$21,3 million, but only R$13 million has been paid to date.

Regarding the water cut, UFRJ reported in note who was surprised by the cut in the water supply to the Rectorate building, the university city hall facilities, the university restaurant and the student residence.

“UFRJ, which was in negotiations with the concessionaire, is looking for ways to reestablish the water supply to the University”, states the institution.

Roberto Medronho, rector of UFRJ, pointed out: “In this building where we are, we do quality teaching, research and extension. Portinari was educated here. Oscar Niemeyer was educated here. How can this building be without electricity?”

“Currently, almost 60% of UFRJ undergraduate students come from affirmative action programs. Many of these students, if UFRJ stops, will not be able to graduate,” he warned.
