The government of Minas Gerais filed a project with the ALMG (Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais) that aims to privatize the cemig. The proposal still needs to be received in Plenary for processing to begin.
At the time, a proposal to privatize Copasa (Minas Gerais Sanitation Company) was also filed.
In an interview with the press, acting governor Mateus Simões defended the proposals and stated that he expects them to be processed quickly. “The two state-owned companies need to undergo a modernization process. We are confident that the discussion is mature and that it will be processed in a matter of weeks or a few months,” he stated.
According to him, the companies, together, are worth more than R$15 billion. When asked about a possible tariff adjustment for the population and the situation of state-owned company workers, the acting governor was categorical: “There is no possibility of a tariff increase, nor any harm to workers,” he stated.
Regarding the constitutional provision for holding a popular referendum for the privatization of state-owned companies, Simões stated that the Executive hopes that the requirement for a popular consultation will be removed from the Minas Gerais Constitution, but itted the possibility of holding it. “For us, holding a referendum is not a problem, but a bureaucracy,” he stated.
In October of last year, Governor Romeu Zema sent to the ALMG the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) 24/23, which removes the requirement of a popular referendum for privatization. The proposal, which is awaiting an opinion from the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ), has been the subject of several public hearings in the Minas Gerais Legislature since then.
