A Microsoft added 389 MW of solar power to meet energy demand for its AI (Artificial Intelligence) operations, bringing its total renewable energy capacity to around 20 GW.

The added energy comes from three large-scale solar projects developed by EDP ​​Renewables North America, located in Illinois and Texas, in the United States. The projects total 400 MW.

The 140 MW Wolf Run Solar Project and the 110 MW Hickory Solar Project in Illinois began operations in November 2024. The 150 MW Cattlemen Solar Project in Texas began operations in December 2024.

To achieve ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance) objectives and meet operations cloud and AI, the company has been adopting renewable energy solutions on a large scale. The latest addition represents about 2% of total capacity.

In addition to adopting clean energy to contribute to its goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030, Microsoft is investing in carbon removal technologies such as direct air capture, rock weathering and reforestation.

The company recently entered into an agreement with Chestnut Carbon to purchase over 7 million tons of carbon credits, covering about half of its emissions in 2023.

In addition to environmental justice initiatives, the projects also bring tax contributions and local job creation.
