O Rio Grande do Norte is the state most affected by cuts in electricity generation in 2024, according to a survey published by the consultancy ePowerBay

De January to JulyThe interruptions in plants located in the State totaled 2,52 million MWh, representing 53% of all energy wasted in Brazil in the period, which totaled 4,75 million MWh.

With 304 wind farms (9,96 GW) and 44 solar (1,22 GW) in operation, with the State counting today a installed capacity of 11,28 GW.

In wind power, the region is the second largest generator in the country, behind Bahia (9,99 GW). In centralized solar, the location is the fifth largest and is only sured by Minas Gerais (4,94 GW); Bahia (2,4 GW); Piauí (2,09 GW); and Ceará (1,25 GW).

In the understanding of the Renewable Energy Committee of Fiern (Federation of Industries of Rio Grande do Norte) the Power cuts can have catastrophic effects for companies in Rio Grande do Norte, with some already recording revenue drops of up to 70%.

The entity also warned that the limitations, intensified after the blackout in August 2022, may also lead to the bankruptcy of the wind and solar industry in the State, since the restrictions are extremely harmful to the renewable energy sector in the State.

Sector solutions and demands

To mitigate impacts, the Fiern calls for greater efficiency on the part of the ONS (National Electrical System Operator) and the use of better load assessment tools.

A entity also advocates that Rio Grande do Norte invest in network infrastructure for the flow of generated energy.

Already Aper (Potiguar Renewable Energy Association) reinforced the need to expand the transmission system to avoid future restrictions and ensure greater energy reliability.

A entity understands that Brazil needs energy, but also a robust system to deal with demands without the occurrence of new cuts.
