The first of three photovoltaic plants planned by Semae (Municipal Autonomous Water and Sewage Service) has started operating in Caxias do Sul (RS). With a total investment of R$4,6 million in the three units, the project aims to reduce electricity costs and expand the use of renewable sources in the municipality.
The plant in operation is located at the Morro Alegre WTP (Water Treatment Plant), in the Vila Seca district. The system has 960 550 W solar modules and was built at a cost of R$1,7 million. The plant is estimated to generate 680 MWh per year, which represents a monthly savings of approximately R$420 thousand – a significant amount compared to the R$1,9 million spent monthly on energy by the agency.
Of the total energy generated, 70% will be consumed directly at the Morro Alegre WTP. The excess 30% will generate credits to be deducted from the energy bills of low-voltage consumer units, such as pumping stations and wells.
According to the mayor of Caxias do Sul, Adiló Didomenico, the initiative marks an important change in the way the city deals with energy generation. He highlighted Semae's environmental commitment, especially in the preservation of natural areas, such as dams.
Two other solar plants have also been completed and are awaiting authorization from the concessionaire to begin operations. One of them is located at the Parque da Imprensa WTP and has 476 modules, with a generation capacity of 330 MWh/year. The investment was R$1,2 million, with an estimated annual savings of R$210 thousand.
The third plant, installed at the Jardim das Hortênsias Reservation Center, has 810 modules and a generation capacity of 570 MWh/year. The unit cost R$1,6 million and is expected to generate savings of R$385 thousand per year.
