The Civil Police of the State of São Paulo intensified the fight against electricity theft in 2024, carrying out 424 operations and 363 arrests throughout the year (an average of almost one arrest per day) in the Enel-SP concession area.

The operations were ed by specialized teams from the São Paulo distributor and were carried out for residential, commercial and industrial customers in the 24 municipalities served by the concessionaire in Greater São Paulo, which total around 7,9 million consumers.

According to Enel-SP, the numbers represent a significant advance compared to 2023, when 310 operations and 219 arrests were recorded.

In 2024, around 86% of arrests occurred in commercial establishments, 10% in industrial facilities and 4% in residences.

Energy theft, popularly known as “gato”, is a crime provided for in the Penal Code, with a prison sentence of one to eight years.

In addition to being illegal, clandestine connections compromise the quality of supply, increase costs for all consumers and put lives at risk.

Unqualified people who attempt to manipulate meters or make direct connections to the electrical grid are subject to shocks and serious, often fatal, accidents.
