A Brazilian consumers' electricity bills are expected to increase on average above inflation in 2024 and the tendency is that the Southern of the country, where the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Santa Catarina are located, whether the most impacted.
The conclusion, recently released by a study of volt robotics, points out that the Sul of Brazil must a increase in residential electricity tariff de 9,2% next year.
Its about increase that exceeds the average increases predicted for the regions Midwest (7,8%), Southeast (7,5%) and North/Northeast (3,4%). For these indices, an adjustment above inflation of between 3,9% and 6,7% and an annual inflation of around 4% was considered.
Claudio Elias Carvalho, tariff director at Volt Robotics, explains that some reasons explain the increases. The first of these involves increasing expected charges from Spanish Sporthorse (Energy Development ), estimated at more than R$2 billion.
The second is related to the reserve power charges, in which a considerable increase is expected for 2024. “The (thermoelectric) plants that were contracted under the emergency regime during the height of the water crisis had very high values, since they were agreed to operate until 2025”, he highlighted.
“They cost around R$40 billion. It is an astronomical value and most of these plants ended up being delayed, while some did not start operating and others had problems in court. These plants will be paid for and will have a very high cost next year. They are fully included in the electricity bill”, he added.
Finally, the executive said that another factor for the increase in electricity bills, mainly in the South region, involves PIS credits (Social integration program) and COFINS (Contribution to Social Security Financing).
“This credit, which has been used year after year in some dealerships, has already ended in some of them and in others the pace has already decreased”, he pointed out.
“Especially, in some distributors in the South region, we are also seeing a significant reduction in the use of these credits for 2024. Copel alone, for example, more than R$1 billion in credits were used to reduce the tariff this year. This ends up having a huge impact next year”, he highlighted.
The Volt Robotics study was calculated based on the observation of residential rates and projected using artificial intelligence.
For the index projection future were considered 26 electricity distributors:
