What was supposed to be a Carnival weekend, with lots of joy and excitement in the streets, turned into a nightmare for thousands of residents of the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza, in Ceará, due to a strong rain that reached the location.

The storm – the second biggest in the last 50 years, according to information from run me (Fundação Cearense de Meteorologia e Recursos Hídricos) – left countless properties and public spaces without electricity for more than a day.

According to Enel, there are still customers without access to electricity in Ceará. The distributor reported that, by the beginning of this Monday afternoon (12), it had normalized the service for 95% of its customers affected by the blackout.

With the high volume of rain, the region also presented scenes of flooded streets, falling trees, in addition to the cancellation of traditional outdoor Carnival festivities.

On social media, numerous reports pointed out that many people suffered losses that affected everyone from bedridden people to workers who needed energy to ensure their livelihood.

More rain ahead

In a statement released this Monday (12), Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology) reported that 85 cities in Ceará remain under intense rain warning, with risks of rain of up to 50mm and intense winds of up to 60 km/h. There are also risks of further electricity cuts.
