The United States Department of Energy announced on Friday (30) the cancellation of funding for 24 clean energy projects approved during the istration of former President Joe Biden. The initiatives totaled more than US$ 3,7 billion in public investments.
The measure comes amid efforts by the current government – led by Donald Trump – to expand oil and gas production in US states, thereby reducing policies aimed at sustainability and the promotion of renewable sources.
Among the projects affected are carbon capture and storage initiatives, as well as other clean energy technologies. One of the most significant cuts was nearly $332 million earmarked for ExxonMobil for a project at the Baytown Complex in Texas that envisaged the production of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia.
Other significant cuts include $500 million for Heidelberg Materials, in Louisiana, and US$375 million for the Eastman Chemical Company, in Longview, also in Texas.
According to the Department of Energy, about 70% of those contracts were signed between Election Day (November 5, 2024) and January 20, 2025, the last day of Biden's term. The companies involved have not yet commented on the cancellations.
