Wind and solar generated 24% of electricity in Brazil in 2024

Country reached 88,2% share of renewable sources in its electricity matrix

In 2024, Brazil will reach 88,2% of renewable sources in its electricity matrix. Of this total, solar and wind power plants stand out, together representing 24% of the country's electricity generation.

According to the BEN report (National Energy Balance – base year 2024), the Brazilian energy matrix reached 50% renewability. 

This advance is mainly due to the continued supply of hydroelectric power and sugarcane biomass, in addition to the growth of other renewable sources, such as black liquor, biodiesel, wind energy and photovoltaic solar energy.

Another relevant piece of data is the performance of the industrial sector, which achieved 64,4% renewable energy consumption. This result was driven, above all, by the increase in the use of electricity (+4,1%), which sured sugarcane bagasse as the main source used by the industry.

Emissions

According to the report, total emissions associated with the Brazilian energy matrix reached 431,3 million tons of CO₂ equivalent (Mt CO₂ eq). The transportation sector was responsible for almost half of this volume, with 214,3 Mt CO₂ eq.

On average per capita, each Brazilian emitted 2,0 tons of CO₂ equivalent in 2024, considering energy production and consumption. In the electricity sector, the emissions intensity was only 59,9 kg CO₂ eq per megawatt-hour (MWh) generated – a rate considered very low. For comparison purposes, this value is about four times lower than the average recorded in OECD countries in Europe and the United States, and up to ten times lower than the rate in China.

It is worth noting that around 70% of Brazilian greenhouse gas emissions are still concentrated in the agriculture and land use, land use changes and forestry sectors. The energy sector was responsible for 20,5% of total emissions inventoried in 2022.
