O Salvador International Airport (BA) reported that it has been recording significant and positive results in expanding its energy autonomy after ing the installation of solar energy systems on the premises of the enterprise. 

Only last year, the road complex generated more than seven million kWh through a solar energy capture infrastructure – with 10.808 photovoltaic modules, fixed to an aluminum metal structure – installed next to the landing and take-off runway in 2020. 

This autonomy would enough to supplyannually, a community of 4,1 inhabitants, according to per capita consumption data in Bahia, published in the Electric Energy Statistical Yearbook. 

In 2023, the generation and use of renewable energy in the complex contributed to fensure that the Bahian airport stops emitting more than 625 tons of CO2 and achieve a 87% reduction in carbon emissions in comparison with the beginning of the concession of the VINCI AirportsIn 2018.

In relation to 2022, the Power generation grew by more than 140 thousand kWh on site, mainly leveraged by the installation, in December last year, of a new solar energy system with 1.125 photovoltaic modules and four inverters, in TECA coverage (International Cargo Terminal).

Such investments helped to make the airport reach (in advance) the goal established by VINCI Airports to halve domestic carbon emissions by 2030. The focus now is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

For this, the Bahia International Airport and VINCI Airports, reported that pintend to continue expanding investments in the use of clean and renewable energy solutions.

 “We are looking for solutions that reinforce our commitment to reducing pollutant emissions, boosting sustainability in the national airport sector” said Alessandra Reis, environmental manager at the airport. 

In addition to the installed photovoltaic systems, the airport reported that it also purchases clean and renewable sources from the Free Energy Market.

For the balance of 2024, Alessandra projected “even greater numbers of energy generation and self-sufficiency at the airport and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions with the consolidation of this complementary structure to the solar plant that was installed in 2020”, he pointed out.
