This Thursday (4), in Brasília (DF), the International Workshop on Non-Technical Losses da ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) to discuss the challenges of economic regulation. The event will be held in a hybrid model through the platform YouTube and in person at the José Carlos Gomes Carvalho Auditorium of the CNI (National Confederation of Industry).

Non-technical losses, known as energy theft or popularly called “cats”, is one of the biggest challenges in economic energy regulation today, according to the Agency. 

As disclosed by ABRADEE (Brazilian Association of Electricity Distributors), around 40,7 TWh were stolen in 2023, equivalent to the value of R$10,1 billion.

According to the regulatory body, the event seeks to build sustainable solutions to serve areas with high socioeconomic complexity, with an impact on the sustainability of the service and the affordability of tariffs.

The opening of the program will be done by the board of directors of ANEEL at 9am, followed by:

  • Technical presentation: “Regulation as an instrument to mitigate commercial losses: its role and challenges”; 
  • Discussion s: “The challenge of providing electricity distribution services in areas of high socioeconomic complexity”, “Working with civil society to guarantee access to quality public services” and “International experiences in reducing commercial losses in the provision of public services . What lessons can we learn?”;
  • Debate and closing table: “What is needed to accelerate the reduction of non-technical energy losses in Brazil? Who are the catalysts for this change?”
