The MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) plans to hold the first auction of storage batteries in the second half of 2025, according to information provided by Thiago Barral, national secretary of Energy Transition and Planning at the Ministry, to Valor Econômico.
The process is in the final phase of adjusting the proposals presented by companies and associations in the sector, as explained by Barral, after participating in a seminar on critical minerals at the headquarters of BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development), in Rio de Janeiro.
The secretary highlighted that, although battery storage is a promising solution to ensure greater flexibility and security in the electrical system, the technology does not replace thermoelectric plants. However, it contributes to the diversification of power resources, which strengthens the reliability of the national energy sector.
Battery auction postponement and next steps
Initially, the first battery auction was scheduled for June this year, but it was postponed to the second half of 2025. The adjustment in the schedule is due to the need to align the agenda with other events in the electricity sector.

Furthermore, according to Barral, the MME is still analyzing the contributions received in the public call opened in 2023, which will help define important aspects of the auction, such as the location of the batteries — whether they will be close to consumers and distributors or whether they will be allocated to energy generation.
The executive also pointed out that the Ministry is in dialogue with the ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) to advance the regulation of storage solutions in the electrical system.
