With the reduction of public auctions promoted by the Federal Government, it was up to the Free Energy Market to drive the expansion of the renewable electricity matrix in Brazil. This is the conclusion of a survey by BNDES, carried out at the request of ABRACEEL (Brazilian Association of Energy Traders).

According to the study, of the 11,2 GW of solar and wind projects financed by BNDES between 2018 and 2024, approximately 83% were aimed at the free environment, with 45% of this amount (5 GW) ed by energy traders.

Traders have invested in the development of generation projects to diversify their businesses, increase competitiveness and ensure greater security in the energy supply.

Mercado Livre: migration volume reaches almost 21 thousand units in 2024

The role of the Free Market becomes even more relevant when analyzing centralized generation projects expected to come into operation between 2024 and 2030. According to ABRACEEL, based on data from ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), there is a stock of 15,4 GW under construction aimed at the free environment.

In total, the ANEEL records 157,2 GW granted to operate between 2024 and 2030. Of this volume, 93% should be absorbed by the Free Energy Market, while only 5,2% are destined for the Regulated Market. The remaining portion is allocated to reserve or still without a defined destination.
