The Brazilian electricity generation matrix closed the year 2024 with an increase of 10,85 GW, according to data released by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) this Friday (10).

The expansion verified is the largest ever recorded by the Agency since the beginning of the measurement, in 1997, exceeding by 750 MW the target of 10,1 GW that was stipulated by the entity itself.

Furthermore, the number of plants also reached a historic milestone last year: 301 new plants in operation, of which more than half of the installed power came from photovoltaic sources.

Solar energy, in fact, was the one that ed the largest number of parks and the highest installed capacity in 2024: 147 new projects were added, totaling 5,63 GW – an advance compared to 2023, which recorded 104 complexes and 4,07 GW installed.

Contribution from other sources

In addition to the advancement of solar energy, other sources also contributed to the expansion of the Brazilian electricity matrix in 2024:

  • Wind: 121 plants, totaling 4,26 GW;
  • Thermoelectric: 22 plants, totaling 906,7 MW;
  • PCHs (Small Hydroelectric Power Plants): nine plants, with 51,80 MW;
  • CGHs (Hydroelectric Generating Plants): two units, adding 4,60 MW.

Adding up all sources of energy generation, the state that contributed most to the expansion of the national electricity matrix last year was Minas Gerais, which led with 3,17 GW added, followed by Bahia (2,40 GW) and Rio Grande do Norte (1,81 GW), as also illustrated in the image below:

Advances in December

A ANEEL also released the results obtained by the Brazilian electricity matrix only in December. In the month, the advance was 502,59 MW through the installation of 16 new plants.

In total, nine photovoltaic plants (244,99 MW), five wind complexes (225,60 MW), one thermoelectric plant (30,00 MW) and one small hydroelectric plant (2,00 MW) entered into commercial operation.

Among the states, Minas Gerais had the greatest expansion in the month, with eight new plants in operation and an increase in supply of 237,22 MW. Bahia came in second place, with two plants and 99,00 MW added to the electricity matrix.
