A China is on the way to achieve 1,2 TW of installed solar and wind energy capacity this month, according to a report from CEF (Climate Energy Finance). Despite being the largest carbon emitter in the world, it is leading the energy transition, fulfilling six years before the government's initial goal.

With a population of 1.412 billion people (2022 data from the World Bank and United States Census Bureau), is the largest generator of pollution in the world. Responsible for approximately 30,9% of carbon emissions, while the United States is responsible for 13,5% and India, 7,3%.

The three countries together for more than half of all global emissions, 51,7%, according to data from the Global Carbon Atlas on 2021 emissions.

considered “factory of the world”, is the largest industrial hub, producing and exporting more than 40% of the 500 main industrial products to all countries. What contributes to the large CO2 emission.

However, the country has also shown great progress in meeting goals SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), to mitigate environmental impacts.

Renewable energy deployment

In an effort to reduce carbon, China set a new record with 75 GW of new authorized renewable energy installations. This number represents almost 65% of the global total of installations.

According to the analysis published by Ember Climate, it has stood out in the expansion of renewable energies and is global solar and wind leader, with the largest generation and largest annual additions.

In the first five months of 2024, 103,5 GW of clean energy capacity have been installed, while additions of thermal energy decreased by 45% .

Only in June this year, the country activated the Mindon solar park, with 13.000 hectares in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, with a capacity of 3,5 GW.

The volume of wind and solar energy projects under construction in China is almost double that of the rest of the world combined, with 339 GW under construction, suring the United States with 40 GW under construction. Brazil appears in third, with 12,9 GW, according to a survey by The Guardian.
