China sees exports of photovoltaic modules grow 13% in 2024

In 2024, China exported 235,93 GW in photovoltaic modules, which represents a growth of 13% when compared to 2023, where 207,99 GW were exported.  

In December, China exported 16,63 GW, up 9% from the previous month and 3% year-on-year, according to customs data from InfoLink.

The five largest importers of Chinese modules were, in that order, Brazil, the Netherlands, India, Saudi Arabia and Spain, representing 42% of the total exported in the month. By 2025, global demand for Chinese modules is expected to grow by between 4% and 9%, according to InfoLink's forecast.

Key factors to watch include Europe’s weak economy, India’s momentum and Brazil’s tariff adjustments on imports. Emerging markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe could continue to grow.

Americas

In 2024, cumulative Chinese module shipments to the Americas reached 33,28 GW, representing a 10% year-on-year increase.

Brazil ed for the largest share of imports in the Americas, with 22,5 GW in total, an increase of 9% compared to 2023. 

Brazil ed for 68% of the region’s total imports, followed by Chile at 7%, with imports totaling 2,48 GW of modules.

Europe

In 2024, Europe imported 94,4 GW of photovoltaic modules, a 7% drop compared to 2023. Excluding the Netherlands, Europe's largest transport hub, Spain ranked second among countries in imports of Chinese modules in 2024.

From January to December 2024, China exported 10,57 GW of modules to Spain, down 10% from 11,75 GW the previous year, ing for 11% of Europe's total, while the Netherlands led with a 40% share.

Asia Pacific

The region imported 68,11 GW of modules from China in 2024, up 26% compared to the 2023 result. Pakistan led the Asia-Pacific market in imports of Chinese modules over the past year.

The region reached 16,91 GW in total, an increase of 127% year-on-year, representing 25% of the region’s total imports. India followed closely behind, importing 16,73 GW, representing almost 25% of the region’s total imports.

Middle East

By 2024, cumulative shipments to the Middle East reached 28,79 GW, representing a 99% increase compared to 2023.

In the region, Saudi Arabia ed for the largest share, importing 16,55 GW of Chinese modules in 2024, an increase of 115% year-on-year.

Saudi Arabia ed for 58% of the region’s total imports, followed by the United Arab Emirates at 16%, with imports totaling 4,51 GW of modules.

Africa

By 2024, cumulative shipments to Africa reached 11,36 GW, representing a 43% increase on an annual basis. 

Among African countries, South Africa ed for the largest share, importing 3,81 GW of Chinese modules in 2024, a 7% drop from the previous year.

South Africa ed for 34% of the region’s total imports, followed by Morocco at 10%, with imports totaling 1,13 GW of modules.
