O Climate Fund will receive contributions of up to R$10,4 billion this year and will be managed by BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development). O value that will be ed on by the MMA (Ministry of Environment and Climate Change) is the largest since the creation of the Fund, which took place in 2009.

In November 2023, the government issued sustainable public bonds on the international market. The bond is in dollars and is aimed at international investors. The return yielded more than US$2 billion. There is also a participation of around R$400 million resulting from oil and gas exploration.

Until last year, the fund's budget was around R$2,9 million. With the new value, the program becomes the main instrument of Federal government in combating climate change and for investments in mitigation and adaptation.

The amount will be used to finance reimbursable projects, istered by BNDES, and non-refundable ones, operated by the Ministry of the Environment, throughout the country, which have the purpose of the implementation of projects, the acquisition of machinery and equipment and technological development related to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to climate change and its effects.

Below are the modalities that can be financed by the Climate Fund:

  • Resilient and sustainable urban development;
  • Green industry;
  • Transport logistics;
  • Public transport and green mobilities;
  • Energy transition (solar and wind generation, biomass and energy efficiency are some of the projects that can apply for financing);
  • Native forests and water resources;
  • Green services and innovations.
