Environmental concerns have become one of the major priorities of the international Olympic movement in recent years. In 2024, for example, sustainability was the main flag of the Paris Olympics, with a series of measures adopted to make the event the “Greenest Games in History”.
Following this trend, the COB (Brazilian Olympic Committee) has just signed an agreement with the neoenergy to supply 100% renewable energy to the Time Brasil Training Center, located in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The energy will be supplied by the Neoenergia Oitis Complex, made up of 12 wind farms located in the states of Piauí and Bahia.
The project is expected to prevent the emission of more than 100 tons of CO₂ per year — the equivalent of approximately 2.146 air trips between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In addition to the environmental benefits, the partnership is expected to save an estimated R$1,4 million in energy costs by the end of 2025.
The initiative is aligned with the global “Sport for Climate Action” movement, which seeks to reduce or offset 50% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The Brazilian committee also believes that adopting this measure could also serve as a model for other training centers in the country to incorporate sustainable practices, both in management and in sports competitions.
Partnership details
Under the agreement signed, Neoenergia will supply the training center with 2.049.387 kWh of energy by the end of 2024, with I-REC certification (Iinternational Renewable Energy Certificate) — which attests to the renewable origin of the energy consumed. This volume is equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 1.300 low-income homes. “For us, it is a great source of pride that the home of Brazilian athletes is aligned with environmental principles,” said Manoela Penna, COB’s Director of Communications and Marketing.
COP30 and renewable energy
The COB's announcement, made this Thursday (14), comes at a symbolic moment, with Brazil preparing to host COP30 (Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), in Belém (PA), between November 10 and 22, 2025. The UN (United Nations) conference will bring together world leaders, organizations and experts to discuss global actions and goals to combat global warming. This will be the first time that Brazil will host the event.
