Free market consumers to grow 58% in 2024

In total, more than 60 thousand customers have the freedom to negotiate energy supply contracts

The Free Energy Market, an environment where consumers have the freedom to choose their suppliers, ed accelerated growth in 2024, driven mainly by the entry of small and medium-sized companies.

According to ABRACEEL (Brazilian Association of Energy Traders), 22.236 new consumers ed the free market this year, representing an increase of 58% compared to 2023. As a result, the total number of loads in the free environment reached 60.767.

In the regional analysis, São Paulo leads with 19.341 consumer units, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (5.913), Paraná (5.062), Rio de Janeiro (5.001) and Minas Gerais (4.769).

Furthermore, free consumers already represent 40% of total electricity consumption in Brazil, an increase of five percentage points compared to the 35% recorded in 2023.

According to ABRACEEL, this progress reflects the growing interest of consumers in seeking more advantageous conditions for energy supply. This movement gained strength after Ordinance 50/2022, which allowed all high-voltage consumers the possibility of choosing their suppliers.

Prospects for 2025

By the end of 2025, more than 36 thousand consumers must complete the migration to the Free Energy Market, according to data compiled by ABRACEEL itself.

Of these consumers, around 34 are small and medium-sized companies, such as gyms, supermarkets, stores and pharmacies. These so-called retail consumers were only able to the Free Energy Market at the beginning of this year.
