Calculated since 1971 by Global Footprint Network, a non-profit environmental organization, the Earth Overshoot Day (Earth Overshoot Day, in English) is recorded annually as the moment when the use of all natural resources available for an entire year reaches its limit.
In 2023, that date was officially ed this Wednesday (two). In other words, in just over seven months, the Humanity has consumed more natural resources than the planet is capable of regenerating in a period of 365 days.
According to the institution, the Overshoot Day has arrived earlier and earlier as the years . In 1970, the world's resources were exhausted on December 29th. In 2000, the deficit was reached in October and, in 2010, at the end of August.
In the last three years, the date has been reached between the last week of July and the first week of August, a situation that just isn't worse than what exists today because of the growth of renewable energy, in the understanding of the entity.
“The current model is far from sustainable and the key question is how to efficiently and fairly meet people’s needs using less energy (from polluting sources) and fewer raw materials,” said Janez Potočnik, co-chair of the International on Program resources for the environment ONU (United Nations Organization).
