O electricity consumption in Brazil reached 46.715 GWh in January, which represents a 9,1% growth compared to the same period last year.

The indicator is fundamental for understanding society's behavior and the performance of the Brazilian economy.

According to EPE (Energy research company), This is the second highest monthly consumption in the entire historical series since 2004. Since October 2023, the country has recorded records for electricity use.

O performance in January é explained by rising temperatures (due to consumers making more use of refrigeration equipment) and the expansion of sectors such as commercial and industrial.

“Since October 2023, the country has recorded record electricity consumption. Driven by high temperatures, consumption in the residential and commercial classes ed double-digit expansion rates for the fourth consecutive month. The industry also consumed more”, highlights EPE.

Driven by the heat and dry climate, the residential consumption was 15.396 GWh in January, 15,7% expansion. This is highest growth rate since 2004.

“Furthermore, the increase in the number of residential consumers – largely due to actions to combat losses and the good performance of economic indicators in Brazil, such as the drop in the unemployment rate and the increase in income – also favored the growth of consumer consumption. class”, says EPE.

The consumption of commercial class was 10,3% higher during the period, reaching 8.908 GWh. The temperature, the good behavior of commerce and the expansion of commercial consumers influenced the consumption of the class.

In turn, the industrial consumption (15.498 GWh) advanced 3,7% in January. Among the monitored sectors that consumed the most, metallurgy (5,5%), extraction of metallic minerals (5,4%) and paper and cellulose manufacturing (3,7%) stood out. In total, 20 of the 37 monitored sectors showed positive changes.

Regulated Market and Free Market

consumption in Free Energy Market, an environment where many companies are located, reached 18.504 GWh, growth of 8,7% compared to January 2023. In the annual comparison, there was the 22,4% increase in the number of free consumers.

According to EPE, “in addition to the migration of consumers from the regulated market, the expansion in industrial consumption, especially the most electro-intensive ones, and the free portion of the commercial class also contributed to the result in the free market”.

Already regulated market consumed 28.211 GWh, up 9,4%. There was a 1,8% increase in the number of consumer units.

Mercado Livre represented 39,6% of national electricity consumption in January. The regulated market, 60,4%.

energy load

O ONS (National System Operator) also released the SIN energy load (National Interconnected System). In January, the load was 79.583 MWmed, an increase of 6,7%. In the last 12 months, expansion was 5,7%.

ing that the energy load is the sum of consumption plus electrical losses caused by the transport of electricity. Data from ONS and EPE differ because they both use different, but fundamental, metrics to understand the behavior of the electricity sector.
