In January 2025, the HI (Broad National Consumer Price Index), which measures the country's official inflation, was 0,16%, the lowest rate for a month since the beginning of the Real Plan, in 1994.

The index was 0,36 pp (percentage point) below the December rate (0,52%), bringing accumulated inflation over 12 months to 4,56%, according to data from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

The main factor behind this slowdown was the 14,21% reduction in residential electricity prices, which had a negative impact of -0,55 pp on the overall indicator.

Electricity is part of the Housing group, which ed a drop of 3,08%, impacting the IPCA by -0,46 pp According to Fernando Gonçalves, IPCA manager at IBGE, this reduction was motivated by the incorporation of the Itaipu bonus, which was credited in energy bills issued in January.

In contrast, prices in the Transport group rose 1,30% and had an impact of 0,27 pp on the IPCA in January, influenced by increases in airfares (10,42%) and urban buses (3,84%). The Food and Beverage group had its fifth consecutive increase (0,96%) and contributed 0,21 pp to the month's index.

About IPCA and results

The IPCA has been calculated by the IBGE since 1980 and reflects the variation in prices for families with incomes between 1 and 40 minimum wages. The index covers ten metropolitan regions in the country, in addition to the cities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís, Aracaju and Brasília. The next IPCA result, for the month of February, will be released on March 12.
