Engie Brasil announced that the modernization of the Salto Osório hydroelectric plant, in Paraná, was completed after six years of work, resulting from an investment of R$300 million.
The result was an increase in the plant's installed capacity from 1.078 MW to 1.103 MW, an increase of 25,67 MW. This also increased the energy marketing capacity by an average of 9,8 MW.
Work on the modernization began in February 2019 and was completed in May 2025. According to the plant manager, Dirceu Rafanhin, the work schedule was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project involved the complete modernization of two generating units, including the replacement of the turbine and generator stator, in addition to the updating of the speed regulation, excitation, monitoring and electrical protection systems, which were also modernized in the other four units.
“The two new units were designed with greater efficiency, that is, they are more efficient, generating more energy with the same volume of water, which resulted in an increase in the plant's physical guarantee and in the power offered,” said Rafanhin in a press release.
“The modernization also brought efficiency gains in the energy generation process as a renewable source, in addition to improving the reliability of the equipment,” added the manager.
Located on the Iguaçu River, in the municipality of São Jorge d'Oeste (PR), the Salto Osório hydroelectric plant began commercial operations in 1975. The plant had already undergone another modernization between 2005 and 2007 – its concession is valid until 2031.
