The volatility of electricity prices in Mercado Livre Brazilian throughout 2024, driven by an unfavorable rainfall scenario, caused the negotiation of energy contracts to reach record levels on the BBCE (Brazilian Energy Trading Desk) platform.

According to the institution, the value negotiated tripled compared to the previous year, reaching R$88,4 billion and more than 100 thousand contracts were transacted on the platform – representing a growth of 324% compared to 2023.

In of volume, 600 TWh were traded in 2024, an increase of 74% compared to the previous year and higher than the total energy consumption in Brazil in 2023, which was 531,9 TWh.

According to the BBCE, the numbers were driven by a combination of factors: severe drought, increased load on the system and greater price volatility in the free market.

In the institution's understanding, the growth reflects the maturation and expansion of the free energy market in Brazil, increasingly demanding speed, safety and efficiency in operations.

Of the total volume operated in 2024, the majority involved quarterly contracts (33%), followed by monthly (30%) and annual (27%).

The platform, which already leads negotiations of contracts with physical delivery, has also expanded its derivatives offering, enabling hedging operations and attracting even more participants to the market.
