Developed by a partnership between Meistro and shipping company Norden-Frisia, the E-Kat, or electric catamaran, is to operate on the crossing between the coast of Norddeich and the island of Norderney. The electricity used for the power system of the E-Kat, dubbed Frisia-1, comes from a solar-ed parking lot with charging stations for electric vehicles.

According to the shipping company's publication, the intention is energy self-sufficiency, using locally produced electricity through a combination of solar s, battery storage and intelligent energy management.

“ wants to be a pioneer in environmentally friendly maritime shipping. In the maritime sector in particular, we have a huge need to catch up on emissions – but also a huge potential. The new generation of electric propulsion systems helps to exploit this potential and shows that understands shipping. I am quite confident that we will see many more examples soon, and that the areas of application and range will also grow,” said Dr. Wibke Mellwig, of the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport.

The solar park from which the energy that supplies the E-Kat is produced is made up of painéis solares 600 parking spaces will be installed, reserved for visitors of the shipping company. According to Norden-Frisia, a battery storage system will also be installed in the future.

In addition to the concept of self-sufficiency, the E-Kat's supply system is based on intelligent load distribution management. Through dynamic control, both electric vehicles like the electric ferry can be charged simultaneously. However, when the E-Kat is charged, the load distributed to the vehicles is lower, giving priority to the catamaran, which takes about 30 minutes to be fully recharged, with a power demand of 1,8 MW.

Since April of this year, Frisia-1 has entered into activity, making up to eight trips a day. The ferry has a capacity for up to 150 engers, with a journey time of 30 minutes, half the time that regular ferries need to make the crossing. Tickets for the ferry can be purchased directly on the Norde-Frisia website and prices can vary from 17,90 euros, depending on the type of route, with capacity to transport vehicles.
