A ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) announced last Friday (23) green flag maintenance names of March. This means that there will be no additional charges on electricity bills.

Because of favorable conditions for power generation, the green flag is active since April 2022. All SIN consumers (National Interconnected System) are subject to this flag. The implementation of mechanism of tariff flags occurred in 2015.

Future scenario

Despite maintenance of the green flag, recently the ONS (National Electrical System Operator) demonstrated a certain concern in relation to country's electricity supply. The alert came about because of reservoir levelss, added to the low volume of rain.

Furthermore, the CMO (Marginal Operating Cost) dropped to zero for the first time since December 2022. The average value in the country reached the mark of R$0,06, which despite being low was the first movement in 14 months.

To José Marangon, PhD in electrical engineering, the change in tariff flag may occur in the second semester, during the months of August or September.

“Reservoirs are coming out of the summer a little low. There is still the end of February and March for rain. What we are predicting is that there will be a change of flag for the months of August and September, but this will depend a lot on the behavior of the load in order to have a more correct idea”, stated the professor.

“If the next summer, from 2024 to 2025, stays the same way, with the El Niño appearing again, the year 2025 will be complicated. It will still depend a lot on the end of this summer period, which should not be very good, but even so we believe that the inertia of the system should not generate changes before August”, added Marangon.
