Gustavo Cerqueira Ataide has been appointed National Secretary for Energy Transition and Planning at the Ministry of Mines and Energy. He takes over the position from Thiago Barral, who is expected to coordinate the energy area at COP30. The appointment was published in an extra edition of Official Gazette last Friday, June 6th.

Since June 2019, Ataide has held different positions in the federal government structure. In September 2020, he became an advisor to the minister. In October 2023, he began serving as chief of staff to the presidency of EPE (Energy Research Company).

Barral, in turn, has been a career employee at EPE since 2007. Between February 2019 and February 2023, he presided over the institution responsible for planning the electricity sector, before taking over the Energy Transition secretariat.

His participation in the organization of COP30 reflects the strategic relevance of the energy sector in the debates on energy transition. The 30th Climate Conference will be held in November this year, in Belém, Pará.
