Aiming for a more robust and reliable energy supply on the coast of the state of São Paulo, ISA CTEEP, a leader in energy transmission in Brazil, started the Operation Plan for Summer 2023/2024.

The initiative will have an investment of R$60 million in 2023. The company forms the link between the generation and distribution of energy, generated in the plants, delivered to companies and distributed to consumers.

The Operation Plan was defined together with other agents in the electricity sector on the North and South Coast and Baixada Santista. The objective is to preserve energy supply during the high season.

To assess the ability to respond to possible events, the company developed a robust plan from January to October, totaling more than 120 tests and simulations.

In addition, there were preventive maintenance actions and conservation of the lanes where the power lines . To access difficult-to-reach areas, ISA CTEEP has a helicopter in Cubatão, in Baixada Santista.

Renovation of the structure on the coast

Much of the infrastructure in Baixada Santista dates back to the 70s, which is why constant modernization is necessary. In pursuit of this objective, in 2023 R$60 million will be invested in modernizing the existing infrastructure on the state's coast. Furthermore, ISA CTEEP monitored 576 kilometers of transmission lines in around 60 flight hours with the help of drones.

Recently, there was an investment of R$45 million in the renewal of 9,6 kilometers of transmission networks in addition to 22 transmission towers in Serra do Mar. The objective is to ensure secure energy supply for the SIN (National Interconnected System).

For possible occurrences, the company is moving mobile substations and transformers, and redistributing equipment used in network maintenance for greater efficiency and speed. These initiatives extend until February 2024.

“In the months leading up to the summer, we developed a robust plan with two main purposes: preparing the transmission network to avoid occurrences during the high season and acting with maximum agility in the event of a possible emergency in our assets”, says Gabriela Desirê, director operations executive at ISA CTEEP.

Pioneering spirit

The key point of the plan is the battery storage project, the first on a large scale in the Brazilian transmission system. Installed at the Registro Substation, its use began even before the summer, during the All Souls' Day holiday.

Last New Year's Eve, the region had a demand of 1685 MW, enough for 5,7 million people. This figure is more than double the fixed population on the coast of São Paulo. On that occasion, ISA CTEEP used its storage system, with the first discharge of energy taking place at 19:21 pm on December 31st.

Extreme weather

The Operation Plan also seeks to prevent extreme weather events. There are recent examples in Brazil, a lot of rain in the South, the exacerbated heat in the Southeast and Center-West and the winds in São Paulo.

Friederike Otto, a researcher at Imperial College London, says that new climate records are expected at the end of the year and in 2024. “The work we are carrying out in Serra do Mar, for example, is essential for the network to be able to deal well with possible winds. strong”, explains Gabriela.
