ISA Energia Brasil invested R$75 million in the expansion of the Água Vermelha Substation, located on the border between Minas Gerais and São Paulo, aiming to increase the capacity of the electrical system and enable the connection of new photovoltaic and biomass generation projects in the region.
The measure will reinforce energy transmission in Northwest São Paulo, especially in the cities of Jales, Fernandópolis and Votuporanga. “Northwest São Paulo has more than 1 GW of centralized photovoltaic generation in operation and it is necessary to offer a robust system so that this renewable energy is integrated into the grid reliably and without the risk of overload in Northwest São Paulo,” he says. Dayron Urrego, the company's executive director of projects.
The expansion of the substation involved the installation of a transformer bank (TR-6) with a capacity of 300 MVA, in addition to high and low voltage connection modules.
“The expansion of the Água Vermelha Substation reflects our commitment to strengthening the transmission network infrastructure in the Northwest of São Paulo. This project not only eliminates the risk of overload, but also strengthens the integration of photovoltaic and biomass plants, contributing to a more sustainable energy supply,” adds Urrego.
During the construction period, approximately 50 direct and indirect jobs were generated by the company. With the energization of the transformer bank, the company obtained the TLD (Definitive Release Term) to receive the RAP (Permitted Annual Revenue) of approximately R$ 9,3 million (2024-2025 cycle).
Expansion and modernization of the installed park
The expansion of the substation is part of ISA Energia Brasil's Reinforcement and Improvement Plan for the expansion and modernization of the installed park with the execution of works to increase the capacity and reliability of the electrical system.
In 2024, the company invested R$1,4 billion to expand and modernize the existing network in the State of São Paulo, a volume 12% higher than that recorded in the previous year.
Between 2025 and 2029, the company estimates investing approximately R$5 billion in reinforcement and improvement projects already authorized by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency). Investments in projects are made with the collaboration of BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development).
Red Water Project
In addition to expanding the substation, ISA ENERGIA BRASIL won the auction at Transmission Auction No. 01/23 of ANEEL, Red Water Project, which foresees an investment of R$ 94 million in the installation of a new bank of single-phase transformers (TR-10). The project aims to reinforce the flow of photovoltaic and biomass generation in the Northwest of São Paulo. The deadline established by ANEEL for the energization of the project is September 2029.
