Largest wind and solar complex in the world will be built in Rio Grande do Norte

French renewable energy company Voltalia has started construction of Solar Serra do Mel 1 and Solar Serra do Mel 2

French renewable energy company Voltalia announced on Wednesday (8) the construction of the Solar Serra do Mel 1 (SSM 1) and Solar Serra do Mel 2 (SSM 2) plants, which total 320 MW, in Rio Grande do Norte (RN). The plants are part of the wind and solar complex Serra Branca, located between the municipalities of Areia Branca and Serra do Mel, with a total capacity of 2,4 GW.

Voltalia currently has around 900 MW in operation in Brazil. Of these, 319 MW come from wind farms (VSM 1, 2, 3 and 4) in operation. “The two energy sources are complementary, since wind production occurs mainly at night. With this, we intend to take advantage of the synergy of the sources and sharing of the same energy flow structure to develop more competitive and profitable projects,” said Robert Klein, president of Voltalia in Brazil, to Reuters.

The SSM 1 and SSM 2 projects have five long-term sales contracts, including to Copel and Braskem. And the forecast is that commissioning will take place in the first half of 2022.
