The promoted by the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA), in Brasília (DF), last Thursday (5), mobilized several representatives of the private energy sector, government authorities and experts to consolidate a common agenda. The meeting aimed to discuss the paths towards a sustainable energy future, with an eye on COP30, which will take place in November, in Belém, Pará.

One of the event’s hosts, the CEO of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Ben Backwell, spoke optimistically about the expectations for the energy sector in the coming years. “Brazil is a world champion in renewable energy and has excellent potential to deliver concrete advances for the rest of the world. It is no exaggeration to view COP30 with great hope; expectations are very high,” he highlighted.

He was ed by the Director General of IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency), sco La Camera, and the CEO of the Global Renewables Alliance, Bruce Douglas. Both remained optimistic in their brief speeches, in English. “It is important to say that there is no way to stop this process. The energy transition is unstoppable,” said sco, to applause. “The opportunity in Brazil is unique and should be celebrated,” Bruce added.

COP30 President André Correia do Lago recorded a video message in which he welcomed private entities and reinforced the event’s commitments. “The launch of this coalition is extremely important. Just as renewables are important, there is an economic logic that we must promote, working together. We must triple renewables, this was one of the most important decisions of the Paris Agreement, and it will be a central theme of COP30,” André pointed out.

“And Brazil is proof that a developing country can do this efficiently, ensuring an excellent supply of energy at competitive prices. We are working together to bring together everyone who knows how to do something in favor of the climate to show that there are solutions and that we can work together,” he added.

Representing the productive sector, the president of ABSOLAR (Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy), Elbia Gannoum, highlighted that the mobilization is extremely important for the country. “Brazil is an important provider of energy resources, and reinforces the role of renewables as a solution for the energy transition. This mobilization comes in this sense, as investors in each area can contribute to achieving the goals of energy transition and tripling renewables, as determined in the resolution in Dubai”, she said.

From the government's point of view, the National Secretary for Energy Transition and Planning of the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy), Thiago Barral, represented Minister Alexandre Silveira on the occasion. In addition to the commitment to tripling renewables, he projects doubling energy efficiency gains as a legacy for COP30.

“Brazil, by combining a tradition of energy planning and the valorization of its renewable energy resources, is fully capable of being a great ally in this mission that GRA has set forth. And I have said that in our energy efficiency agenda, the combination that we have of hydroelectric, solar, wind, storage, biomass, and bioenergy is simply unbeatable,” he extolled.

In turn, the Secretary of Green Economy, Decarbonization and Bioindustry of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Rodrigo Sobral Rollemberg, highlighted the advances in the Brazilian agenda in recent years, which signal the path that the country must follow.

“It is important to listen to the productive sector, because we want major investments in Brazil based on this discussion. We have two major challenges. One of them is this global implementation agenda, so that countries take on bold goals, but also guarantee resources to implement what was agreed upon. We need to prioritize this implementation agenda, the world has been sending messages, such as global temperature increases. And we also have to present Brazil as a major investment destination for companies that need to accelerate their decarbonization programs,” concluded Rollemberg, who represented the minister and vice president Geraldo Alckmin at the event.
