O MetroRio, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), avoided a emissão de 60 thousand tons de CO₂ em 2023 with use de renewable energyI know how solar, wind e biomass.

The calculation to obtain this value was made from perspectives of emissions generated by the metro system and other modes in the city, in addition to statements from concessionaire customers about which transport to use, if the metro did not exist.

“The operation of the metro system is fundamental for us to think about the role of high-capacity transport in preserving the environment. These are gains for the city of Rio de Janeiro and for society as a whole”, highlighted Guilherme Ramalho, president of MetrôRio.

In of comparison, railway modes – according to the monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions carried out by the Pereira os Institute in the city of Rio de Janeiro between 2012 and 2021 – emit on average 100 times less gases than road transport.

The company states that engers' choice of the subway, in addition to contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions, reduces travel time, number of cars in circulation on the streets, fuel consumption, among other factors.
