The state of Minas Gerais leads the country in solar power generation, with 7,39 GW of capacity, of which 3,8 GW of GC (Centralized Generation) and 3,5 GW of GD (Distributed Generation)Furthermore, the state government formalized around R$3,9 billion in investments in renewable sources of energy in the last year.

Among these sources is the green hydrogen, which has recently gained space in the global energy market.

One main investments is in Belo Horizonte. The German company Neuman & Esser is investing R$70 million in a new equipment factory green hydrogen generators in the state capital.

“The world is shaping up for this, but everyone is still looking for the way. It's a market that practically doesn't exist yet. Therefore, it is a great opportunity to be explored by Minas Gerais to promote this chain, generating jobs and business, placing the State and Brazil itself on a different level in the world”, stated Marcelo Veneroso, president of Neuman & Esser in Brazil.

The works are expected to be completed in the second half of 2024. With the factory ready, the project should generate around 70 direct jobs in addition to another 350 jobs indirectly.

Future of green hydrogen

In August 2023, the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) presented the National Hydrogen Plan (PNH2) 2023-2025. In it, the ministry mapped around US$30 billion in investments in Brazil.

Veneroso spoke about Minas Gerais' potential to attract investments in this energy source. “More than 95% of our energy is from renewable sources, we have the industry that produces and consumes the fuel, we have companies that manufacture the equipment that will produce hydrogen, and companies that manufacture green products using hydrogen and we have export capacity . Minas can have the entire hydrogen chain within its territory. It’s an exponential impact,” he said.
