ONS raises energy load projection to 6,5% in February

The estimate was for a 3,7% increase at the beginning of the month, which did not materialize due to increased consumption amid heat waves.

The ONS (National Electric System Operator) has once again raised its estimate for the energy load in Brazil in February, now projecting a growth of 6,5% compared to the same period last year, reaching 88.670 MW on average.

O number exceeds the forecast from the previous week, which indicated an increase of 5,8%. At the beginning of the month, the estimate was for an increase of 3,7%, but the accelerated increase reflects the increase in electricity consumption due to heat waves, driven mainly by the intensive use of air conditioning.

This week, the Southeast/Central-West subsystem, which consumes around 70% of the energy produced in the country, reached a record maximum demand: 54.599 MW on average, amid temperatures above average for the period, according to the ONS.

In the bulletin released this Friday (21), the agency also revised its projections for the influx of rainfall in hydroelectric plants in February.

Forecasts rose for the Southeast/Central-West regions (85% of the historical average, compared to 84% the previous week), South (86%, compared to 81%) and North (112%, compared to 111%).

On the other hand, there was a slight reduction in the estimate for the Northeast (87%, compared to 90%). Despite the rains, the level of hydroelectric reservoirs in the Southeast/Central-West, the country's main energy storage region, was revised to 69,7% at the end of February.
