With below average rainfall, ONS (National Electric System Operator) expressed the need for the Federal Government to adopt measures additional of prevention so that the without (National Interconnected System) has sufficient resources to meet the demand for electrical energy.
The agency highlighted that it has been reporting for some months now that the affluence, that is, the volume of water that reaches the reservoir of a hydroelectric plant and that can be transformed into energy, is below the MLT (Long Term Average, which is the average verified for a history of 94 years of measurements.
“With rainfall below expectations, there is a reduced availability of hydraulic resources, especially in the northern region of the country, whose contribution to serving peak loads is fundamental”, highlights the entity.
In this way, the Operator warns that for periods of the day with higher load consumption (which happens at night, especially in the months of October and November), the scenario requires the adoption of operational measures additional and of a preventive nature, which were presented at the beginning of August to the CMSE (Electricity Sector Monitoring Committee).
The measures listed by the ONS are:
- Minimize the dispatch of hydroelectric plants in the North subsystem, to preserve the region's water resources, with a view to meeting the peak load in the months of October and November;
- Maximizing power availability at the end of the dry period, which considers the postponement of maintenance, when possible, and the anticipation of the return of unavailable assets;
- Activation of LNG thermoelectric plants with early dispatch, such as the early dispatch of UTE Termopernambuco, starting in October 2024;
- Expanding the use of tools such as demand response mechanisms.
The Operator reinforces that all these additional measures are preventive and taken precisely to “meet society's demand, with no risk of energy shortages”.
