A Petrobras and Gerdau signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the aim of exploring commercial opportunities and potential partnerships aligned with diversification strategies e decarbonization of both companies.
In separate statements, the companies said the agreement is non-binding, with a validity period of two years. The partnership involves developing business models for low-carbon fuels, hydrogen and its products, among others.
“In a strategic move to address the environmental challenges of the 21st century, Petrobras and Gerdau announced an agreement that aims to explore and develop sustainable solutions in the context of low-carbon businesses,” said Maurício Tolmasquim, director of Energy Transition and Sustainability at Petrobras.
Flávia Souza, global director of Energy and Supplies at Gerdau, stated that the partnership will allow the steel producer to advance in its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which is currently 0,91 t CO₂e per tonne of steel to 0,82 t CO₂e per tonne of steel by 2031.
“Partnerships like this contribute to the development of technologies and initiatives that aim for a low-carbon economy, creating avenues of opportunity for the decarbonization of the steel industry,” said the executive.
