Global energy investment is set to hit a record $3,3 trillion in 2025, with two-thirds of that total – around $2,2 trillion – earmarked for clean technologies alone, according to a new report from the IEA (International Energy Agency), released on Thursday (05).

Among all sources, solar photovoltaic energy remains the main player in the energy transition, with a forecast of attracting US$450 billion in investments this year.

The battery storage segment, essential to guarantee greater security and stability to the network, also records accelerated growth, exceeding US$ 65 billion in investments.

Nuclear energy, although less representative, is experiencing a moment of global recovery, with a 50% growth in investments in the last five years – totaling US$ 75 billion projected for 2025.

Overall, global spending on renewable energy generation has doubled since 2020, led by the strong expansion of solar power and the advancement of other sustainable technologies.

According to the IEA, this movement reinforces the leading role of clean energy sources in the new global energy scenario. On the other hand, investments in fossil fuels are falling.

The oil sector is expected to contract by 6% in 2025 – the first since the Covid-19 pandemic – driven mainly by the slowdown in spending on shale oil in the United States.

However, the study highlights that there is an opposite movement in the LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) segment, with new projects being developed in countries such as Qatar.

For Fatih Birol, CEO of IEA, the data reflect an important turning point. “Amid geopolitical and economic uncertainties clouding the outlook for the energy world, we see energy security emerging as a key driver of global investment growth this year,” he said.
