The Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro should encourage the implementation of and access to solar energy systems in areas of social vulnerability.

The initiative is planned in Law 10.654 / 25, authored by deputy Rosenverg Reis (MDB), which was approved by Alerj (Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro), sanctioned by governor Cláudio Castro and published in the Official Gazette of the Executive this Tuesday (7).

The new legislation updates the Law 7.122 / 15, which a decade ago instituted the Policy to Encourage the Use of Solar Energy in Rio de Janeiro municipalities.

“Solar energy has a lower environmental impact, not generating polluting waste or greenhouse gases, and is a clean resource, unlike thermoelectric plants, for example, which produce energy from coal,” said Rosenverg.

Rio de Janeiro is currently one of 13 Brazilian states with more than 1 GW of installed distributed solar generation capacity, according to data from ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).

The state of Rio de Janeiro has approximately 1,36 GW of installed capacity, distributed across more than 140 thousand installed photovoltaic systems in all 92 municipalities that make up the state.

NGOs

Rio de Janeiro currently has several projects that aim to bring solar energy to underprivileged communities. The actions are led by non-profit organizations, such as Revolusolar.

In 2021, the entity, for example, built the first photovoltaic cooperative in a favela in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro. The project received national and international awards and is now being replicated in other communities throughout Brazil.
