UFC (Federal University of Ceará) signed a long-term contract with the trading company RZK Energia to receive renewable energy in ACL (Free Contracting Environment). In total, 32 consumer units linked to the educational institution will be served by 2029 in Free Energy Market.

The savings, over 60 months, are estimated at R$8,3 million for the university. The agreement foresees the contracting of a volume of 133.861,59 MWh, destined to supply colleges, laboratories, istrative headquarters and cultural and research centers in eight municipalities of Ceará (Fortaleza, Sobral, Crateús, Russas, Eusébio, Quixadá, Itapajé and Pentecoste).

Among the consumer units are all UFC campuses, which house more than 200 undergraduate and postgraduate courses, in addition to the Rectory, the Casa Amarela Eusélio Oliveira (CAEO), the UFC Art Museum (Mauc) and the Institute of Marine Sciences (Labomar).

From the partnership established with RZK Energy, these symbolic university structures will have access to electrical energy from renewable sources, such as solar photovoltaic and biogas.

“As one of the main renewable energy generation, marketing and management companies in the country, we continue to invest in a strong growth strategy that allows us to competitively serve public and private clients with different profiles, such as UFC, which is at the forefront of education and scientific innovation in the Northeast region and in Brazil,” says João Pedro Correia Neves, partner at RZK Energia.

Growth of the free market and democratization of the energy transition

Open to medium and high voltage consumers of Group A (above 2,3 kV) since the beginning of 2024, the energy contracting modality through ACL allows negotiation to be carried out directly with the supplier, outside the distributor and with the possibility of choosing a renewable generation source, resulting in reduced emissions and savings on electricity costs.

Since October 2023, the free energy market has grown by 50% in the accumulated 12 months and the volume of energy consumed has increased by around 14%, according to data from Abraceel. According to the entity, the number of free consumers reached 53,8 thousand consumer units in the period, representing a gain of 17,9 thousand new consumers.

According to its partner, RZK Energia has been following this moment of opening and growth of the free energy market in the country as an opportunity to advance the energy transition.

“We are looking at a potential of 20 million consumer units from the full opening of the free energy market in the coming years. In addition to democratizing access to clean and cheap energy through flexibility in choosing the supplier and source, the offer in the ACL can also include offers with greater added value and technology, such as that made by RZK Energia, which includes decisive tools for savings and sustainability gains, whether in consumption management or invoice auditing,” he explains.
