With the increasing growth of renewable sources in the world, the aviation industry has faced a major challenge: reducing its global carbon emissions.
In this context, SAF (acronym for “Sustainable Aviation Fuels”, translated from English to Portuguese) has been consolidating itself as a promising solution to make this happen.
The SAF it is an alternative fuel to fossil-based aeronautical fuel, produced using renewable energy from raw materials such as vegetable oils and biomass.
An example of its application occurs through the BioTJet project, from the company thyssenkrupp Uhde, which is installing one of the first plants dedicated to the production of SAF in Europe.
The initiative aims to transform SAF into a competitive and affordable alternative worldwide by 2030. BioTJet uses PRENFLO® gasification technology, which converts biomass into renewable fuels and chemicals.
This process can be applied to a wide range of materials, such as wood waste and other types of biomass, and is one of the most promising methods for large-scale production of sustainable fuels.
The company explains that with the new regulations ReFuelEU Aviation – which require that around 70% of the fuel used at European Union airports be SAF by 2050 – projects like BioTJet tend to gain more and more prominence.
